History of Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

 

The most sacred place of pilgrimage for those who are Hindus and the most revered holy shrine that is visited by hundreds of pilgrims. Neelkanth Mahadev temple is located on the top of a hill, above that of the Swarg Ashram in Haridwar. The temple is dedicated in honor of Lord Shiva who was believed to be the most complex and adamant of gods of the Hindu Pantheon. The design and construction of the temple has an interesting story to relate. According to mythological tales of the popular imagination the god Shiva took a drink of the poison that was the consequence of the swirling the ocean or "Sagar Manthan".


 The idea behind the temple is believed to be the exact location in which this incident took place. The moment the Lord consumed the poison his mouth turned blue. This is why this temple has been referred to as Neelkanth" meaning 'Blue Throat'. The main temple is home to an Shiva Lingam and the atmosphere around the place is mysterious and subdued. People who are devoted also receive Prasad offerings from the temple as well as Vibhuti along with Chandan. The temple also holds two fairs each year in the month of Shivratri and another between July and August, during the month of Shrawan. In this period devotees view it as their right and good fortune to be part of the festivities and Pooja.
